World No Tobacco Day: A Chance to Breathe Easier Together

Every year on May 31, people around the world raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco. This special day is called World No Tobacco Day. It’s a time to learn about how tobacco and nicotine products harm our bodies, our families, and our communities — and to support those who are trying to quit.

At Elevate, we care about helping people live healthier, happier lives. Our mission is to support those facing substance use and mental health challenges. That includes helping people break free from addictions like tobacco and vaping. World No Tobacco Day reminds us how important this work is.

Why Are Tobacco and Vaping Dangerous?

Tobacco is a plant people smoke, chew, or sniff. It contains a drug called nicotine, which is very addictive. That means once you start using it, it’s hard to stop. Tobacco harms almost every part of the body and can cause:

  • Lung cancer

  • Heart disease

  • Breathing problems

  • Stroke

  • Gum disease

But it’s not just cigarettes and cigars we need to worry about today. Vaping has become very popular, especially among teens and young adults. Vaping devices, also known as e-cigarettes, heat up a liquid (called vape juice) that contains nicotine, flavors, and other chemicals.

Many people think vaping is safer than smoking, but it’s not. Vape liquids often have high levels of nicotine and can harm the lungs, heart, and brain — especially in young people. Some studies show that vaping can lead to other types of substance use later in life.

And just like tobacco, secondhand vapor from e-cigarettes can be harmful to others nearby.

Tobacco, Vaping, and Our Community

Tobacco and vaping don’t just harm health; they affect families, schools, and neighborhoods. Many people start using these products because of stress, peer pressure, or to cope with tough emotions. Over time, these habits can become addictions that are difficult to break.

The work we do at Elevate allows us to see up close and personal how addiction affects people’s lives in many ways. That’s why we offer programs and support to help people quit tobacco and vaping, along with other substances. No one should have to face these struggles alone.
