Go Sober for October: Support Recovery, Support Elevate

Every October in the United Kingdom, thousands of people take part in a challenge called Go Sober for October. The idea is simple but powerful: go alcohol-free for 31 days. What started as a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that helps people living with cancer, has grown into a major health and social movement.

The benefits go beyond raising money. Participants often find that a month without alcohol helps them sleep better, save money, improve their mood, and even lose weight. It’s also a chance to reset their relationship with drinking and see how life feels without it.

Why Bring It Here?

We don’t have an official “Sober October” in the U.S. (although Dry January is popular with many), but the idea can easily be adopted. At Elevate, we know how powerful even small changes can be for people working toward recovery and healthier lives. Taking one month to go without alcohol can:

  • Give your body and mind a much-needed rest.

  • Save money you might have otherwise spent on drinks.

  • Help you wake up feeling more clear-headed and energized.

  • Show support for loved ones who are in recovery.

Make It Your Own

Want to try it this October? Here are some ways to make it work:

  • Commit to 31 days alcohol-free. Mark October 1st and take it one day at a time.

  • Do it with friends. A group challenge makes it easier and more encouraging.

  • Support Elevate. Instead of buying drinks, consider donating the amount you would have spent to Elevate. Your gift helps provide much-needed programs and services for people in recovery and their families.

  • Track your progress. Write down your wins to stay motivated — better sleep, more energy, or the dollars you save.

Stand With Us This October

“Go Sober for October” started in the UK, but the message is for everyone. Together, we can build healthier habits, raise awareness about recovery, and support those who need it most.

If you’d like to take part, we invite you to use October as your alcohol-free month and consider donating to Elevate. Your commitment can change lives — including your own!
